Wedding
Cake Trends: Unique Cake Toppers
What
makes a trend a trend? Back in high school it meant that your
best friend and her sister both said it was “cool”.
Today’s trends in wedding cakes emerge in much the same
way…one idea builds on another.
Although
the well-known plastic bride and groom topper may be passé,
it is considered très chic to incorporate a unique
topper on your wedding cake. Modern cake designs may include
any number of elegant or whimsical ornaments that reflect
the personalities of the matrimonial couple. This doesn’t
mean that you have to have an exact replica of the Mayflower
on the top of your cake because your fiancé is a history
buff. Your initials in a stylish pattern are personal enough
for a special topper; a monogram can be done in icing or in
stunning cake jewelry.
Other
ideas for a memorable topper include a beautiful bow fashioned
from rolled fondant; personalize your bow with colors, patterns
or textures that tie directly into your reception’s
theme. A bow is only one example of sugar art that could trim
your cake. Brainstorm ideas with your fiancé and your
cake maker. Talented sugar artists can create just about anything
in sugar: butterflies, flowers, even hand-modeled figurines.
As
you decide on the crowning touch for your cake keep one thing
in mind. This is your wedding. Let the cake represent your
own tastes. For a little inspiration, take a look at some
